North Enfield Cricket Club’s 1st XI emphatically defeated Reed by seven wickets at Strayfield Road on Saturday, as their brilliant form continued.
Half centuries from Kieran Jones (91) and Tom Coughlan (86*) anchored the hosts’ chase of 256 with 23 deliveries remaining on a sweltering afternoon.
Chris Gillman (39) and Jones put on 74 for the first wicket to give North Enfield the perfect start to their run chase, punishing any errors in line or length from the Reed attack.
The loss of Gillman saw Coughlan arrive at the crease and the start of an outstanding 166 run second wicket partnership that rapidly took the game away from the visitors.
As the bowlers started to tire amidst the ongoing heat, Jones passed 50 for the fourth time in the league this season and Coughlan worked his way into his innings.
The pair continued to accumulate and as Coughlan reached a half century of his own, the result of the game started to appear to be beyond doubt.
Despite Jones and Irfan Ali (3) falling in quick succession, Coughlan was able to clip the winning run into the leg side, with William Munt (1*) at the other end.
Reed had earlier managed to get away from the hosts towards the backend of their innings and surpass 250, although their total ultimately proved not to be enough.
Two wickets for Oliver Munt and one for Coughlan had seen Reed fall to 38 - 3, only for a century stand for the fourth wicket to bring them right back into the game.
Although North Enfield continued to chip away and a couple of Ishan Tilakaratna run outs saw Reed’s number four dismissed for 93, the visistors were still able to find the boundary regularly and post a competitive score.
A dominant run chase though allowed North Enfield to claim another 30 points and consolidate their position in third in Division 4B of the Hertfordshire Premier Cricket League.
Elsewhere, North Enfield’s 2nd XI lost by eight wickets at Kimpton, whilst a 110 run first wicket partnership between William Munt (109*) and Chris Gillman (79) was in vain on Sunday, as the Friendly XI lost a last ball thriller to Mandarins.
