North Enfield Cricket Club’s 2nd XI fell to a 55 run defeat at Hatfield Hyde on Saturday on a lively pitch.
Chasing 245 for victory, they ended up on a respectable 189 - 6 from their 40 overs, as they failed to chase in excess of 240 for the second successive week at the start of the season.
An unbroken 62 run partnership between Andy Corgan (29*) and Ivian Varbanov (28*) saw North Enfield finish on a high and conclude with eight batting points, although the result had long since been beyond doubt.
After a watchful opening stand of 47 between William Munt (39) and David Brandon (20), the visitors’ slim hopes of victory were pinned upon Stuart Halley, who looked in good touch.
When he was bowled for 39 though, the game was well and truly up, although the partnership between Corgan and Varbanov added further respectability to the proceedings.
An aggressive, unbeaten sixth wicket partnership of 77 had earlier taken the game away from North Enfield, as the hosts amassed 63 runs in the final five overs.
Three wickets from captain Garry Orton had largely allowed North Enfield to check them in check, despite a first wicket stand of 54, and when David Malleson removed Hyde’s captain courtesy of a diving catch from Corgan, the game was in the balance with Hyde on 167 - 5.
Their number six then unleashed a brutal onslaught, hitting eight fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 61 from just 35 deliveries, boosting them from 181 - 5 to 244 - 5 at the end of the innings.
On a difficult surface, which saw plenty of bounce throughout the day, particularly for Richard Lee (1 - 24), chasing 245 was always going to be difficult and North Enfield came up short, although they still managed to pick up 13 points from their day’s work.
Elsewhere, the club’s 1st XI lost to Hatfield Hyde as well, despite an all-round performance for the ages from Kieran Jones (5 - 60 and 119*), whilst the Friendly XI narrowly lost to Stoke Newington by nine runs on Sunday.
